Tom loves to teach and is a lifelong professional musician who is as passionate about creativity, innovation and community as he is about education and technology.
He is proficient in a wide variety of types of music, including Classical, Blues, Rock, Jazz, Folk and Country, as well as historical and regional styles, including Middle Eastern, Irish, Renaissance and Medieval music. He is also experienced with film scoring, leading groups, and producing music and sound for computer games.
He has also worked as a professional performer and composer, plays more than 20 instruments and has taught improvisation, as well as music theory and composition. He has instructed hundreds of students across more than 30 years of teaching.
After his first university training in Psychology and Psycholinguistics, he taught K12, and later became a social worker for the Head Start program. He taught music on the side while involved in these other activities.
Tom returned to school for a degree in Computer Science and then worked in the electronic gaming industry, directing development of music and sound effects for computer games, eventually becoming a producer and developer of educational software. He spent 16+ years at Microsoft in a variety of roles at The Microsoft Network and later at Microsoft Research, where he handled outreach to the academic research community.
After leaving Microsoft, he has once again focused on music performance, composition and teaching.
